Crafty goodness

Today is about Christmas crafting. .. its been a while since Frankie and I did some crafts, I think this is the last one we did together.. that I can remember anyway. Inspired by Alicia's pompoms and some Japanese craft books. Its a fun project, very happy and colorful. Alicia references this tutorial, over at Kiddley. Perfect for young and old. And even grinches.
I wonder where my mom got all her great craft ideas when we were growing up, you know, without the internet! Was there some secret mom underground where the instructions for soap fish were passed around? You know, those oval shaped bars with matching tulle over them to make a big fishy tail, sequins glued on. The little pearl headed pins we used for them to stand on? Any one? sound familiar? I know other people made the mosaic ashtrays, I've seen those in antique stores. I think those were kits. Leather laced wallets? Embossed Copper? WOODBURNING????

Ok, well that's enough of that. I guess we'll end this holiday blog hop on that slightly scary note!!

Today is Linda's day!! I know she' s cooking up something good for us. Check it out.
So hoppers, thanks for coming by and listening to my crazy Christmas stories. I hadn't thought of so many of them in ages. Gudrun will be tallying up the comments and announcing the winner in a couple of days, so stay tuned.
And starting Monday, back to our regularly scheduled program. Yikes, it's almost Thanksgiving! Thanks again everyone. You guys are the greatest. xo

When you said soap fish I had no clue what you were talking about, then came the description of the tulle, sequins, and pearl headed pins...I thought 'oh my gosh' I remember those!!! My mom didn't make them, but I was so jealous of my friends that had them! Remember the toilet paper crochet covers with a rosette on top?

How 'bout some magazine photos decoupaged to plaster of paris shapes and crackle painted? The best one ever was turning the TV Guide into a Christmas tree -- the closest thing to origami. Of course, I couldn't get the full effect because no one would buy me or allow me to use spray paint. And that is what is wrong with my life.

OMG - I just remembered that half painted pressed cardboard napkin holder on my grandma's kitchen table - I was so embarrassed when I spotted that still on her table as I entered my teens! mortifying workmanship - but she wouldn't part with it.
It's just as well that this is the last day - it means I can get something else done next week!

This has been a lot of fun. I appreciate you ladies doing this and the thought and time that went into it. It's wonderful for those of us that can't do a driving shop hop because of time or just whatever reason. Thank you.

This has been fun - and to think that the Christmas season is just starting!!!

My mom never did crafts, never sewed, never did much "with" the kids but always did "for" the kids. I have no memories of spending time "with" Mom but have memories of "what" Mom did - always presents under the tree, a beautiful Christmas tree and ALWAYS the best homemade cookies in the neighborhood.

I love you, Mom.

Soap fish? SOAP FISH?? How did I miss such an opportunity? I would have LOVED THAT--especially if it was colored, scented soap since all we used was blocks of Ivory.
Obviously I was NOT introduced to such an amazing concept.
And I feel really sad about that right now.

Those soap fish - oh goodness! Pam, I don't know where you find the time - you get so much done! I was lucky enough to win the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks from Lynette Anderson, so I now have that to add to the "next project" pile! Congrats on being part of that great project as well.
BTW - I think our moms depended on Women's Day and Good Housekeeping magazines for all their ideas. I know that's where most of my crafts came from many moons ago!

I am spending every moment from now until Christmas crocheting princesses with big skirts, who -- wait for it -- actually secretly cover up a roll of toilet paper!

I invented this idea myself. Don't be a copycat.

I know where my mom got lots of her ideas.....from Workbasket magazine and another one called Popular Handcrafts. A couple of years ago a friend passed along about two years worth of issues of that magazine from the 1950's. And yes, there is enameling, woodburning, all sorts of stuff in those issues. I remember Pack-of-fun for my kids in the 70's and there were always great ideas in Woman's Day and Family Circle. Every craft comes around again so look for woodburning to make a comeback in a few years. Not sure about the laced leather wallets. :-)

I know I'm older than you, so I definitely remember all those crafts. My dad died 2 months ago and going through his house I ran across a laced leather comb case I had made for him. Thanks for the great memories.

Sure, I remember leather stamping, copper enameling, what about bondoogle lanyards...I thinkthe first craft I remember is my Mom and Aunt making snow scenes under overturned wine glasses. Always had to go to the hospital bazaar to find out what is new...AND I'm going today...not going to tell you how many yrs it's been, LOL
Thanks for being part of the hop and sharing all your memories and inspirations!

We used bead and sequins to decorate the silky covered styrofoam oranments. I still have a few from the mid-70's though the silky thread is a bit fly-away. Where did mom and Grandma come up with those ideas?

My mom made a lovely winking snowman toilet seat cover out of felt. She still uses it and it cracks me up!

Hi Pam, Have you recently blogged about how PKM got its name or did I dream it? I have been sick this weekend so sleeping more and dreaming more. If you DIDN'T name it after looking at the Japanese fabric website Kitty-craft one morning, then I did dream it. I also may be losing my mind. Dreaming about blog names..
